The Ducks : Summer of The Ducks! High Flyin' Ducks! (Neil Young) | URBANASPIRINES

The Ducks: High Flyin' 1977 (2023)

anyone remember that Neil Young posted and streamed a band from 45 years ago?
Turns out it was HIM!

Kostas says:

A memorable but short-lived project, the Ducks were a bar band based in Santa Cruz, California whose lineup featured Neil Young on guitar and vocals, though he was not the leader of the group. In the spring of 1977, former Moby Grape vocalist and guitarist Jerry Miller was working with various musicians, and Young found his way on stage one night with Miller (whom he knew from his Fillmore days) and a singer-songwriter named Jeff Blackburn (who co-wrote "My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)". Young began hanging out and jamming with Blackburn in the days that followed with Blackburn on rhythm guitar, Bob Mosley on bass, and session musician Johnny Craviotto on drums.

Sir Douglas Quintet - Just a Teeny Bit of Your Love | jt1674

Well let’s start the day with a favourite song . . . admittedly first heard by Bobby King and Terry Evans of Ry Cooder fame who’s sole album together makes this into one of the most erotic paeans to physical love I have ever heard (seriously!) . . . but here a more prosaic version from The Sir Douglas Quintet and nothing wrong with that!

Thought for The Day : Laurens Van Der Post meets the Kalahari Bushmen

"In The Lost World of the Kalahari, explorer Laurens van der Post shares a haunting moment from his time with the Kalahari Bushmen.

One night, they asked him a simple question:

"Why can't you hear the stars?"  He laughed, thinking it was a joke. But they weren’t joking.

When they realised he truly couldn’t hear the stars sing, their joy turned to sorrow. To them, the sounds of the night sky were real—an intimate part of nature’s voice. Not hearing it meant something far worse than deafness. It meant disconnection.

To the Bushmen, the greatest tragedy wasn’t losing your hearing…It was losing your relationship with the universe."

Speedy says: In 2015, The Who celebrated their 50th anniversary as a band.  To commemorate the event, the band launched The Who Hits 50! tour. While Roger Daltrey hinted on numerous occasions that the tour would be the band's "long goodbye", they still are playing shows even as I type!  In any event, given the magnitude of a their 50 year anniversary, in June 2015 the band headlined not one but 2 major festivals - Hyde Park and Glastonbury.  This FM broadcast captures their set at Glastonbury, on June 28, 2015, a decade ago today.

KRLA . . . . . THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL in 1966!

Ever the fan of Americana [things of American origin art, music, writing, alternative counter culture ] then this is a joy to behold as it contains several of the earliest influences and bands I adored; admittedly in odd order and juxtaposition and whilst I was young and just post- Monkees my burgeoning adoration of love for the Lovin’  Spoonful, it would be some time until I discovered Love [Forever Changes really]. The Captain hisself much later (Trout Mask and then earlier and forever onward!] and I didn’t really ‘dig’ the Beach Boys early surfing’ schtick it was all too too foreign (Charley don’t surf!) What was a lil Deuce Coupe? Sir Douglas (of Quintet fame?) would be much much later (thru’ Dylan?) and the Byrds though their covers of Bobby too (the first way lots of British heard any Dylan although we may not have known Manfred Man’s Mighty Quinn was our Bob for the longest time . . . but clearly SOMETHING was going on

Oh to be in Hollywood in the Summer of ‘66

59 YEARS AGO ON THIS DAY in 1966, The Beach Boys The Byrds, Love, Captain Beefheart, The Lovin Spoonful and Percy Sledge all appeared at The Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, California.

According to the (usually very reliable) 'Electricity' site (link below), Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band did actually perform at this June 1966 event.

Dylan of the Day - How do you find new music these days? [Dec 2020] | Don's Tunes

How do you discover new music these days?
Bob Dylan:
Mostly by accident, by chance. If I go looking for something I usually don’t find it. In fact, I never find it. I walk into things intuitively when I’m most likely not looking for anything. Tiny Hill, Teddy Edwards, people like that. Obscure artists, obscure songs. There’s a song by Jimmy Webb that Frank Sinatra recorded called, “Whatever Happened to Christmas,” [It was the 19th December!] I think he recorded it in the 60s, but I just discovered it. Ella Fitzgerald’s “A-Tiskit, A-Tasket.” Janis Martin, the female Elvis. Have you heard her? Joe Turner is always surprising me with little nuances and things. I listen to Brenda Lee a lot. No matter how many times I hear her, it’s like I just discovered her. She’s such an old soul. Lately, I discovered a fantastic guitar player, Teddy Bunn. I heard him on a Meade Lux Lewis – Sid Catlett record.
Performers and songwriters recommend things to me. Others I just wake up and they’re there. Some I’ve seen live. The Oasis Brothers, I like them both, Julian Casablancas, the Klaxons, Grace Potter. I’ve seen Metallica twice. I’ve made special efforts to see Jack White and Alex Turner. Zac Deputy, I’ve discovered him lately. He’s a one man show like Ed Sheeran, but he sits down when he plays. I’m a fan of Royal Blood, Celeste, Rag and Bone Man, Wu-Tang, Eminem, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, anybody with a feeling for words and language, anybody whose vision parallels mine.
Waterloo Sunset is on my playlist and that was recorded in the 60s. “Stealer,” The Free song, that’s been there a while too, along with Leadbelly and the Carter Family. There’s a Duff McKagan song called “Chip Away,” that has profound meaning for me. It’s a graphic song. Chip away, chip away, like Michelangelo, breaking up solid marble stone to discover the form of King David inside. He didn’t build him from the ground up, he chipped away the stone until he discovered the king. It’s like my own songwriting, I overwrite something, then I chip away lines and phrases until I get to the real thing. Shooter Jennings produced that record. It’s a great song. Dvorak, “Moravian Duets.” I just discovered that, but it’s over 100 years old.

Melanie - Gather Me (1971 us, polished professional and joyous, 2016 remaster) Plain & Fancy (Rockasteria)

Melanie - Gather Me (1971 USA, 2016 remastered)

"Kinda got a feelin' we're not in Kansas no more, no more, no more, no more, Toto stop your barkin', 'cause we're not in Kansas no more" .... you just gotta love this short little throwaway 'wizard' of a song from the "Gather Me" album by Melanie Safka (photograph of 4 year old Melanie by Dagmar).

After the release of The Good Book in early 1971, Melanie Safka and her producer (and then husband) Peter Schekeryk left Buddah Records to form their own label, Neighborhood Records, and the new freedom seemed to do her a world of good -- Gather Me, released later the same year, is one of her most accomplished and confident albums, a set that allowed Melanie the room to indulge her lyrical obsessions while Schekeryk created superb musical accompaniment from her simple but forceful melodies. The epochal "Ring the Living Bell" is a pocket suite that takes a skeletal lyrical conceit and gives it flight through sheer belief while Schekeryk's arrangement, reinforced with gospel style vocal backing, makes this accomplishment all the more impressive.

"Railroad," "Little Bit of Me," and "Steppin'" display a lyrical maturity and subtle strength that marked a real step forward for Melanie as a songwriter, and "Some Say (I Got Devil)" is an emotionally devastating tale of a pregnant teenager who clearly has no idea what she should do. Melanie's habit of overplaying her hand as a vocalist is thankfully in retreat on Gather Me, which finds her in full control of her instrument and communicating a wide palette of emotions without becoming melodramatic. And if "Brand New Key" comes across like a silly novelty tune in this context, it's a playful and engaging one, and Melanie sounds like she's having fun putting Freudian symbolism within the grasp of AM radio. Gather Me may well be Melanie's finest album, capturing her at the height of her skills as a writer and singer, and it has stood the test of time better than the majority of her work
